Analysis

My composition is a Polynesian poem that has been transformed into a song, in the Polynesian style. My composition is in simple quadruple time. it is played at 90bpm which is about moderato, so not too fast but not too slow either. The composition doesn't have a very strong sense of pulse. The rhythm is mainly comprised of long and medium-sized note values, which are mainly crochets and quavers. The melody is also comprised of the same note values which the majority being long and a few short.

The composition contains medium to high note pitches for the melody, as it is sung by a female singer. The composition has a major tonality. Overall the song doesn't have a very large range of pitch, rather having a short range of notes. The song is played at the same speed throughout the whole song though it starts with moderately quiet then at the chorus, it gets to moderately loud. There is also an accent on the last note, which gives it emphasis.

The song has a homophobic texture as it is comprised of a melody (which is the singer), rhythm (which is the claves) and chordal accompaniment (which is the acoustic guitar) although its texture seems very thin, not that dense or busy as it only has three layers.

The tone colour of the Polynesian composition is flat, as there isn't much depth and the claves give it that feel. The piece is also fairly light, bright and is quite mellow, which all suit various aspects of Polynesian music. The structure of the composition is a basic structure, it is comprised of a 2 bar intro, consisting of chords, then coming into the verse with the guitar chords, singing and the claves, the verse is also played at a moderately quite dynamic. Then after that is the chorus, played at a moderately loud dynamic, which lasts to the end. In the last bar, the claves stop playing and the singing and guitar only remain.
